One of the best works of one of the best composers of all time, conducted by one of the best conductors of all time. Furtwängler was an anti-Nazi who stayed in Nazi Germany during WWII, because "people never needed more, never yearned more to hear Beethoven and his message of freedom and human love, than these Germans who had to live under Himmler’s terror." The circumstances, combined with Furtwängler's genius, create a powerful performance that, despite the antiquated recording method, still holds up today.

I came across this band when using Google to find the origin of a badly-worded story about a Russian immigrant experimenting with his sexuality.

Google led me to this band's Facebook page, where I saw their name was an Arrested Development reference. How could I go wrong with that? It turns out this band is actually really good, and you should listen to their EP. Nevernudes will probably be the next big Pitchfork phenomenon when they get around to releasing an LP, so you might as well get some cred by hearing them before they were cool.

     So, I downloaded a torrent of Lil’ Wayne’s leaked Rebirth to get a ratio boost. (The idea of downloading something tagged as cash.money.records and young.money.enterprises for free was also enticing.) Out of the goodness of my heart, I decided to give this auto-tuned, overambitious mess a listen.
     The album begins with a few tracks that would be acceptable as mediocre rock songs, if not for Lil’ Wayne’s auto-tuned whining. I have to admit that this sound is preferable to regular Lil’ Wayne, who sounds like a chain-smoking 4-year-old. “Prom Queen” sounds like the kind of song someone who just discovered pop music would write, with by-the-book dynamics and structure, mildly awkward chord progressions, and processed nu-metal instrumentation.
     Phase 2 of Rebirth keeps the awkward chord progressions but turns off the auto-tune, forcing the listener to pay more attention to Lil’ Wayne’s awful lyrics. Of course, he decided to keep the formula of using clever rhymes to cover up the complete lack of substance and meaning. “Ground Zero” is a good example of this, but more interesting is the chorus, which blatantly rips off George Michael’s “Father Figure”.
     Then, we arrive at what’s probably the worst track on the album, “Paradice”. This is a ballad. Auto-tune returns here, to compliment his crooning over a I-V-iv-IV progression. Then comes “Get a Life”, which I assume was written by some terrible pop-punk band, since it sounds like some garbage off of FUSE translated into a rap song.
     The next low point is “Drop the World”, which combines a refrain of “BITCH IMMA PICK THE WORLD UP AND IMMA DROP IT ON YO’ FUCKIN’ HEAD.” with some seemingly unrelated synth lines (possibly ripped from a keygen) floating in the background, and a verse featuring the slightly less horrible Eminem.
     Then, the next three tracks are attempts at various forms of radio pop, like R&B(“Runnin’”), Natty-Ice-Bro-Rock(“One Way Trip”), and some sort of twisted J-rock(“Knockout”), with an unknown guest singer on each one.
     The album ends with “The Price is Wrong”, which sounds like it might be a cover of a Nickelback filler track. I hope Lil' Wayne dies.

Saves the Day - In Reverie

Initially, I grouped Saves the Day in with the wave of shitty pop-punk bands they showed up with, but especially on this album, they went far beyond pop-punk. The singer uses a Kevin Barnes vocal style, along with lots of jazz chords, while keeping every song around 3 minutes and in conventional pop structure. You'll listen to the whole thing 20 times in the week after you first hear it, trust me.

Runhild Gammelsæter - Amplicon

Runhild Gammelsæter's(the vocalist from Thorr's Hammer and Khlyst) solo album. It's a dark, noisy, intense album with an ambitious concept(imagine Dark Side of the Moon, except more all-encompassing). Runhild has the ability to turn her voice from a feminine croon into a menacing growl in seconds, and she doesn't hesitate to do this. Listen to this.

Everyone said this was bad when it came out, so I put off listening to it. Until yesterday, when I finally did. It's actually really good. Don't listen to the haters. WittR is probably just too trve und deepe for them.

Johannes Brahms - Symphony No. 1

This is probably my favorite album/piece/whatever of all time. It begins with a haunting melody played over a giant, echoing bass drum, then it instantly stops and lets a few dissonant notes out, slowly building itself back up to a menacing force made up of abrasive violins and grandiose percussion. I could describe the entire first movement like this, but I'll spare you that and just let you listen to it. Performed by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Bruno Walter.

Magazine - Secondhand Daylight

This is a great album, one of the best from the post-punk era. The atmosphere and lyrics are dark and brooding, but bright, melodic synth lines occasionally appear, contrasting Howard Devoto's Lou Reed-esque vocals. The sound, along with great songwriting, creates something eerily beautiful.

The Records were a power-pop/jangle-pop/whatever band that never managed to be as famous as Big Star, Badfinger, and other bands they were arguably better than. Every song on this album is a power-pop classic that could stand on its own as a single.

Jon Brion - Meaningless

Jon Brion's more well known for his movie soundtracks, but he released this solo pop album in 2001. I discovered it after watching a clip of Elliott Smith messing up his own lyrics on Jon Brion's short-lived TV show. It's the same vein as Elliott Smith, but with more of Montreal-esque elements to it. "Same Mistakes" is also the best song ever, by the way.

So, Weezer's "Raditude" leaked this evening. Of course, following the pattern of four terrible albums, it's terrible.

You've probably heard (If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To, the first single from the album. Sound familiar? They ripped off the goddamn Band Aid commercial. Granted, that's less embarrassing than Dope Nose ripping off the Flintstones theme song, but you'd think someone at the record label would notice these slip-ups. Though, that would involve having to listen to an album whose cover art would be more apt if the dog was spraying diarrhea shit all over its living room.

The first thing that popped out at me was "Can't Stop Partying". It's on the album. Remember the acoustic demo from Rivers Cuomo's "Alone II" that we all thought was a spur-of-the-moment joke song? Apparently, they think it's good enough to include on their latest album, along with a verse from Lil' Wayne, the awful overhyped rapper that's now headed to prison for a year. I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure I heard some autotune in there too. I wouldn't be surprised.

"It's supposed to be fun! And tongue-in-cheek!", you say. Well, there's no fun allowed in music. I just won't stand for fun, hence the name of my blog.

I guess I can appreciate the fact that they at least tried to pretend they put some effort into writing these songs. There are half-assed, but existent, hooks throughout the album, unlike half of The Red Album. Unfortunately, while the melodies can be passed off as legitimate, the lyrics don't fare nearly as well.

And if you was me, honey, you would do it too

This didn't work with "We Are All On Drugs", and it doesn't work now. You don't need to rewrite the same song every mainstream rapper has released to make a heavy-handed statement about how shallow people are, well, shallow. This only applies if Rivers is being ironic here, and I'm not 100% sure that he is. He did make the decision to sacrifice artistic integrity for commercial success, after all. Did he actually choose "The Good Life"? Has he decided to make the move from ironically being a conceited moron to actually being a conceited moron? Either way, this album sucks.

A quick look at the subject matter of the songs on "Raditude" will tell you that Rivers is writing either about being a self-confident ladies' man("I'm Your Daddy", "The Girl Got Hot") or a heartbroken pile of emotional goo("I Don't Want To Let You Go"). Last time I checked, the man's happily married with a kid. Either he's pulling out the insincere half-assed demos that weren't good enough to be on prior albums, or he's just making things up at this point.

But when I saw you grooving on the dance floor
Normal came to an end

What an interesting anecdote, Rivers. I think I'd like it if you just stopped making music.

The second worst moment on the album might be when "Love is the Answer" transitions into what I assume is meant to be the poor man's "Within You Without You", with some vaguely Indian-sounding singing and instruments.

After a certain point, the album changes from being generically ironic into being generic, period. Like, the first half is The Red Album, and the second half is The Green Album. There isn't much to say about The Green Album. The songs are all boring and share the same structure. I frequently forget music is playing when I listen to it. All this applies to Raditude as well. I'm sorry; I can't write anymore. This album sucks.

I'm going to go listen to Pinkerton now.
